Chapo Guzman's Trial

Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, known by various aliases, including "El Chapo" and "El Rapido," was sentenced on July 17, 2019, by U.S. District Judge Brian M. Cogan to a life term of imprisonment plus 30 years to run consecutive to the life sentence for being a principal leader of a continuing criminal enterprise – the Mexican organized crime syndicate known as the Sinaloa Cartel – a charge that includes 26 drug-related violations and one murder conspiracy.

Guzman Loera was convicted by a federal jury on Feb. 12, 2019, following a three-month trial, of all 10 counts of the superseding indictment, including narcotics trafficking, using a firearm in furtherance of his drug crimes and participating in a money laundering conspiracy.

Interpreters were essential to every stage of the case, highlighting the importance of the profession in the administration of Justice.

Gigi Sefchick

Being originally from Mexico, I was fascinated by this case. I followed the Trial of El Chapo Guzman closely, just as I recently closely followed the Trial of Genaro Garcia Luna, Mexico's former public security secretary and architect of its deadly war on drugs, who was also found guilty in federal court of taking bribes from the drug cartels he had sworn to combat.

I hope you find this content as fascinating as I do. The testimony and evidence provided at El Chapo's trial seem like something found only in fiction. I took 12 weeks of testimony and narrowed them down to a 4-hour course.

I have many online courses, but this is my first Instructor-Led workshop. It will be a hybrid workshop because students will work on their own in the platform, and we will only regroup for discussions, questions and answers, and comments.
