What to expect in this course. DO NOT SKIP!!!

This very dynamic course is for English<>Spanish Court Interpreters. It is part of the Expert Witness Series. It will provide the court interpreter a variety of opportunities to learn and practice DUI terminology easily and quickly, in an interesting and effective manner.

Interpreters are called to interpret in Trials where defendants and/or surviving victims, witnesses and family members are non-English speakers. They need to be able to interpret accurately everything that is being testified to or presented by Law enforcement officers, phlebotomists, and forensic toxicologists. This requires interpreters to not just be skilled in the interpretation modes, but also knowledgeable of the terminology in both English and Spanish. In order to be proficient in both English and Spanish, we must also understand what they are talking about!

For someone who's been present in a DUI trial, hearing terms and phrases such as Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay, Retrograde Extrapolation or Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry, would not be a surprise. This requires interpreters to not just be skilled in the interpretation modes, but also knowledgeable of the terminology in both English and Spanish. In order to be proficient in both English and Spanish, we must also understand what they are talking about!

This course will provide many opportunities to learn and practice terminology and interpretation skills, which include:

  • 2 professionally recorded audio tracks and fillable forms with the terminology used and PPT videos to assist in translation.
  • 2 texts to practice sight translation skills
  • 6 short videos of experts explaining different topics for interpretation, with downloadable lists of terms.
  • Texts to practice sight translation with underlined terms to practice sight translation.
